Humanity First is a humanitarian relief organization registered in 50 countries across 6 continents, and has been working on human development projects and responding to disasters since 1995. Based in Vaughan, Ontario, Humanity First Canada is an international non-profit volunteer based charitable organization providing relief and assistance to the less fortunate in Canada and across the globe to alleviate poverty and improve their quality of life.
According to Toronto Public Health (TPH), close to 100 people struggling with homelessness died in Toronto in 2017. On average, that’s close to two deaths a week. Over the past couple of years, homelessness has become a serious issue, especially in our winter months when sleeping rough can become fatal.
To help alleviate this issue, Humanity First is launching its Humanity First Shelter Bus project. The Shelter Bus will be a repurposed coach bus, optimized to provide a safe, comfortable place to sleep overnight. It will be outfitted with 30 beds, a kitchenette, lounge space, bathrooms and wifi.
A project of this level brings complexity and impact, which requires years of wisdom and experience to maximize the impact we are trying to make on the streets of the Greater Toronto Area. Our advisory board is made up of professionals from various industries such as transit, academic, marketing and finance.
A group of 16 individuals from various backgrounds make up the core team of volunteers launching this program at Humanity First. The team is made up of transit professionals, global health veterans and students.
Humanity First Shelter Bus has developed relationships with various organizations to support the conversation and operation of the Shelter Bus across Greater Toronto Area.
